Estimation of evapotranspiration rates and root water uptake profiles from soil moisture sensor array data

چکیده
Evapotranspiration is arguably the least quantified component of hydrologic cycle. We propose two complementary strategies for estimation evapotranspiration rates and root water uptake profiles from soil-moisture sensor-array data. One our implementation ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF); it treats sink term in Richards equation, rather than soil moisture, as observable to update. The other a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) applied same observable; supplemented with Fisher information matrix quantify uncertainty its predictions. use numerical experiments demonstrate accuracy computational efficiency these techniques. found EnKF be orders magnitude faster either standard or MLE, MLE procedure require an order fewer iterations converge counterpart moisture. These findings render methodologies viable practical tool evaporation rates, technique used when prior knowledge about at site elusive.

Dynamic modeling of root water uptake using soil moisture data
In this work a dynamic model of water uptake from plants growing in naturally vegetated areas subjected to a rainfall and evaporation time series is described. The model results are compared and contrasted with popular pre-existing models. Also, the effects of the uptake pattern on the movement of water across multiple soil layers are also analyzed. The results showed that contrary to common mo...
متن کاملUsing Soil Moisture Data to Estimate Evapotranspiration and Development of a Physically Based Root Water Uptake Model
In humid regions such as west-central Florida, evapotranspiration (ET) is estimated to be 70% of precipitation on an average annual basis (Bidlake et al. 1993; Knowles 1996; Sumner 2001). ET is traditionally inferred from values of potential ET (PET) or reference ET (Doorenabos and Pruitt 1977). PET data are more readily available and can be computed from either pan evaporation or from energy b...
متن کاملDiurnal Method for Evapotranspiration Estimation from Soil Moisture Profile
Water use of plants can be manifested in diurnal signal of soil moisture changes, and also of water table fluctuations in shallow water table environments. The signal can be especially strong in case of groundwater dependent forest vegetation with high water demand, where the water uptake is partly happening across the capillary zone. A new technique for water uptake estimation was elaborated o...
متن کاملEvapotranspiration Estimation Using Soil Water Balance, Weather and Crop Data
The rise in water demand for agriculture, industry, domestic, and environmental needs requires sagacious use of this limited resource. Since agriculture (mainly irrigation) is the major user of water, improving agricultural water management is essential. Efficient agricultural water management requires reliable estimation of crop water requirement (evapotranspiration). Evapotranspiration (ET) i...
